ENDODONTICS,dental smile
In Dentistry it is called endodontic treatment, but most of you are familiar with the term ‘root canal treatment’ and it is absolutely necessary when decay has progressed so deeply that it affects the ‘core’ of the tooth, the pulp. The pulp is a mass of living tissue, which consists of vessels and nerve axons. When it is damaged and pulp necrosis occurs, inflammation and abscesses are created on the apex, causing severe pain and swelling to the patient. For this reason, the dentist’s early intervention is necessary not only to relieve from the symptoms but also to save the tooth.

In Odontiatriko Kritis a digital Panoramic System is available so that diagnosis is precise and without the slightest delay. As a result, root canal treatment can start right away, for the benefit of our patient.

Which is the procedure followed?

Immediately after the clinical and x-ray examination, the dentist will procede with the root canal treatment. If necessary, he will initially drain the infected tooth in order to offer immediate relief from the pain. Because in Odontiatriko Kritis absence of pain is one of our top priorities, the whole procedure is performed with full local anesthesia.

Then, the dentist will remove  the damaged pulp from the inner part of the tooth, will carefully clean the root canal or canals-depending on the tooth- and will seal them up to prevent microbe penetration.

If the infection has spread beyond the tooth, the dentist may move on to a temporary filling and recommend the use of antibiotics until the inflammation recedes. In this case, root canal treatment will not be completed in one single visit , but will go on until the dentist is absolutely certain that the tooth is free of inflammation.

When the root canal treatment is completed, it is essential to take measures so that the tooth with the root canal treatment is preserved for many years. Therefore, depending on the scale of damage on your tooth, the dentist will suggest the best rehabilitation method, which could be a typical obturation or a crown.

Which is the success rate for a root canal treatment?

According to data based on international scientific research, root canal treatment is effective in a rate of over 90%. It will have to be repeated when special anatomical reasons are involved, for instance when root canals are shaped in such a way that the dentist cannot clean them thoroughly.

Anyhow, it’s a fact that endodontics science has largely evolved, so dentists are now able to save teeth in most cases. And of course, the most correct way to keep your teeth ‘intact’ is appropriate oral health care on the one hand, and visits to your dentist on a regular basis on the other hand. Your dentist will be able to detect any damages on your teeth at an early  stage, before they penetrate to their inner part.
